Manage people and policy
Administrator Manual
Administrators bootstrap the instance, create local accounts, decide signup policy, review reports, and apply account moderation actions.
First administrator setup
- Confirm the operator has configured NYALIN_ACTOR_KEY_ENCRYPTION_KEY before account creation. Local accounts need ActivityPub actor signing keys.
- Open Setup on a fresh instance and create the first local account. The first account becomes administrator.
- After first setup, public signup defaults to closed until an administrator changes the signup mode.
- Sign in and open Account to confirm the session. Use Profile to add a display name and summary before inviting others.
Create accounts
Open Account, expand the Account menu, then choose Accounts under Administration. Create local accounts for people who should join a closed or invite-only instance.
Only check Administrator for trusted staff. Administrator accounts can create more accounts, change signup settings, and apply moderation actions.
Signup settings
- Closed: administrators create accounts manually. This is the default after first setup.
- Open: visitors may use Sign Up if other signup requirements are satisfied.
- Invite only: reserved for invite-driven operation; keep user-facing expectations conservative until invite workflows are enabled.
- Require email verification: only works for public signup when the operator has configured SMTP. Without SMTP, required-email public signup remains unavailable instead of sending secret links to logs.
Reports and moderation
- Open Reports to review the open moderation queue. Reports can target accounts or notes.
- Resolve a report as actioned or dismissed when review is complete.
- For account reports, apply a warning, temporary suspension, indefinite suspension, or restore action as appropriate.
- Use Closed reports to inspect prior decisions. Public moderation history appears on account pages only when public history visibility is enabled and a public note exists.
