Use Nyalin day to day

General User Manual

This manual follows the normal path from getting an account to posting, reading timelines, using deck, and managing safety controls.

Get an account and sign in

  1. If this is a new instance and no account exists, the operator or first administrator uses Setup to create the first local administrator.
  2. If public signup is open, use Sign Up. If signup is closed or invite-only, ask an administrator to create your account or invite you.
  3. Use Sign In with your local username and password. The Account page shows the active session and the logout button.
  4. If your account is suspended, Nyalin shows a status message and hides account-use actions until an administrator restores access.

Profile basics

Open Profile to set your display name and summary. Your public account page shows your handle, profile summary, profile timeline, and available social actions.

A local profile can be followed, muted, blocked, reported, or sent a direct note by other signed-in accounts when policy allows those actions.

Post notes and media

  1. Open Notes and write in the compose box.
  2. Choose Local only when the note should stay on this instance instead of being delivered through federation.
  3. Use Attach to upload an image. Nyalin processes thumbnails and stores media through the configured S3-compatible storage.
  4. Use Library to reattach prior uploads. Search in the media library helps find files you used before.
  5. Publish the note. Use reply, quote, boost, reaction, detail, or delete actions from timelines and note detail pages.

Read timelines

  • Home: people you follow and your own activity.
  • Notes: public local timeline and compose surface.
  • Profile: notes from one account.
  • Notifications: follows, replies, quotes, boosts, reactions, and mentions that need attention.
  • Deck: anchored columns for parallel timeline-style views. Columns scroll horizontally on small screens; they are not draggable windows.

Search

Search covers notes and profiles when the operator has configured a search backend. If search is not configured, the page explains that the instance has not attached a search service yet.

Attachment search inside compose is for finding files you already uploaded so you can reattach them; it is not a general cloud-drive file manager.

Safety actions

  • Follow / unfollow: controls whether an account appears in your home timeline.
  • Mute: hides an account from your view without creating a public moderation record.
  • Block: stops interaction edges that cross the block boundary.
  • Report: sends a note or account report to administrators. Include enough context for moderation review.
